How to Clean a Range Hood and Remove Grease and Dust

A hood over your stove is a great way to keep the exhaust fan in your kitchen hidden. It keeps grease out of the air  and also removes fumes, smoke, heat, and steam from your cooking space. Since the hood of a range is used pretty frequently, it can become greasy and dusty incredibly quickly. Here are some simple tips to keep it looking like new.

Wipe Down the Outside of the Hood

Begin the cleaning process by wiping down the outside of the range hood. Grease easily lands here and attracts dust and pet hair. It needs to be cleaned regularly. Start with paper towel or heavy duty rags to clean and break up the grease. Mix anti-grease dish soap with warm water and start by thoroughly wiping down the hood.

Clean Away Stains from Under the Hood

Dust and grease don’t only reside on the outside of the range hood. The vent is installed under the hood of the range and, depending on how long it’s been since it was cleaned last, the vent may be a big mess. A scrub brush is the best tool to tackle this greasy project.

There are different commercial products on the market to help you cut through the thick layers of grease, but warm water, baking soda, and your favorite dish washing liquid will work just as well! Mix the dish soap, water, and baking soda into a paste and start wiping down the vent.

Remember to use water to clear the debris away from the ventilation fan. Start the process again until the vent is completely clean.

Remove the Filter and Clean it

Fill your kitchen sink with hot water, dish soap, and ¼ cup of baking soda. Remove the filter and fully submerge it into the water, letting it soak for 20 minutes.

Once the grease has started to break up, grab your scrub brush and start scrubbing away the mess. Don’t press too hard – you don’t want to damage the filter! Remember, you may have to drain and refill your sink several times, depending on the severity of the dirt.
